The Nighthawk Experience EP.1 – Current Lies

Uncategorized

The Nighthawk Experience is a joint musical and animated project brought to life by musician Scott McDonald-Bull. The journey takes you into an anime art style world of a 17 yr old Nihilist, Kage who is trying to find meaning and purpose. Other characters are hinted at in his prologue and will be appearing in more detail in later episodes!

The track starts mellow with acoustic guitar and electric guitars wailing apathy. The lyrics speak of skepticism as the character Kage walks around the city viewing crowds of people on a morning commute before sunrise with the homeless already hard at work begging. As Kage sits to ponder at a park bench the sun rises, and with it the music swells into hard hitting cinematic rock reminiscent of The Devin Townsend Project with big and heavy chords and soaring vocals. The track ends with a foreboding keys and the distant ring of a church bell as a new character is teased for the next episode.

Episode 1 of the Nighthawk experience has us on the edge of our seat! It’s fantastic to see an artist collaborating with an animation team long term to commit to a multimedia collection of music like this. We can’t wait to see how this develops.

Make sure to watch the episodes below, and follow The Nighthawk Experience on Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, and Tumblr.

Magic – 3.3.3.

Uncategorized

Magic is our favourite track from 3.3.3.’s debut album The Good Fight released earlier this year. Born and raised in the Midwest as the son of a preacher, Gabe Stroup of 3.3.3. started learning to play music by ear at a young age.  He draws upon a wide variety of inspiration ranging from artists such as Jeff Buckley, Deftones, Kendrick Lamar, Sevendust, and NIN. This broad range of influence can be felt in the diverse music he showcases through Magic and other tracks on The Good Fight.

Magic starts with a high energy drum beat and bass riff that sounds like Interpol has finally decided to play at a faster tempo. This immediately drops into a minor chord led verse that lets out the angst Gabe is conveying through this track. The song breaks up its relentless rock groove with occasional patches of swelling brass, higher falsetto vocals and hip-hop influenced beats which foreshadow a rap feature from Dub Flow which takes the track down a Nu-Metal path with heavier chugging guitars going into a highly emotive guitar solo.

Magic is a creative masterpiece full of flawless moments joining diverse genres and styles seamlessly.

3.3.3. Is definitely an artist we’re going to be keeping an eye on!

Liar – VÏKÆ

Pop

VÏKÆ is joining the ranks of new artists pulling the rising tide of introspection among younger audiences. With her latest single she self evaluates her own faults when it would be easier to push the blame on to the other. ‘Liar’ explores her struggle with bipolar and the toxic behaviours that come along with it, such as a tendency to lie.

VÏKÆ’s vocals strike similarities with Lana Del Rey evoking a sense of beautiful tragedy fitting for this song dealing with one’s own problematic behaviour. The beat developed by producer Mazbou Q (formerly Unchained XL) is reminiscent of the 90s, smooth and sultry with rich harmonies. The initially sparse track leaves time to soak in the rich soundscape that’s being crafted as it crescendos into a fat catchy chorus.

The single liar has been put to film in VÏKÆ’s music video you can find on Youtube. The video was shot in Melbourne and finishes with VÏKÆ dressed in Ukrainian traditional dress revealing her truest and most authentic identity.

VÏKÆ moved to New Zealand from Ukraine seeking refuge post Chernobyl. We hope she sticks around to keep pushing the New Zealand Music scene up to the next level.

Don’t miss her upcoming EP set for release in April, follow on her website, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube.

Waiting – Biispo

EDM

Waiting is the first track released by California native Biispo this year, and boy does this track slap.

Biispo knows how to craft a soundscape reminiscent of the best clubbing nights I’ve ever experienced. Beautiful vocals, and surging builds climax with filthy synth lines that get your foot tapping even when you’re typing at a desk. The track finishes off with a fantastic half time sliding synth line that makes me doubt my own sobriety.

And here I am putting that track on repeat to listen again.

This track is sick. Can’t wait to see what else Biispo has in store for us! Keep up with Biispo on Facebook, Instagram, and Spotify.

Sofar Sounds – Roman Lewis, Becksy Becks, Brudini

Live Music

Three very distinctive artists took the stage on Monday night at the cozy cafe ‘Mouse Tail Coffee Stories’, to wow a captivated audience on a cold wintery evening. Dozens of locals sat on cushions and blankets with wine and snacks as they listened in.

First to take the stage was Roman Lewis, England’s answer to Hozier. Roman Lewis played acoustic guitar and sang of love and loss with a rich deep tone. His more serious tales were put on hold as he invited us to “take a bite outta [him] if you have a taste for stupidity”. He sang a song dedicated to memes, and told the story of a particularly loved panda cup from Washington. Roman finished his set with a favourite from his 2019 EP, ‘Midnight in Paris’ which showed off an impressive vocal range. He casually danced about high falsetto notes with effortless control; a truly spectacular performance.

Second up was a charismatic spoken word poet Becksy Becks who launched into a casual icebreaker with the audience asking about our experience with infidelity. This turned into heavy hitting topics of mental health, and chauvinism mixed in with advice against criticizing a man’s hairline. Without an instrument to add to her voice, Becksy Becks captivated the room as well as any four piece band.

The night was finished with a three piece who set up a miniature drum kit, a double bass, two synthesisers and a guitar. Eerie discordant synths faded in putting the audience on edge, waiting for music to start. Brudini stood at the front of the stage speaking prose of ghosts dropping a sheet of written lyrics to float to the ground. As soon as the paper hit the floor, the synths cut into a jazz groove of snare and double bass with fingerstyle guitar. The music began. We were taken on a journey of sounds taking influence from russian, jewish, flamenco and all varieties of electronic music. This was coupled with Brudini’s haunting singing and occasional prose sounding the end of the world. What an experience.

All round a fantastic evening. If you haven’t been to a sofar sounds before we would highly recommend heading over to their website to see what gigs are happening soon! They can be found in most cities worldwide.

For more information on the acts see Roman Lewis, Becksy Becks, and Brudini. Roman Lewis is releasing his new EP this Friday and performing at the Courtyard Theatre in London. Becksy Becks can be seen performing again next Monday at The Social in London.

Never Should Have Gone – Isaac Penrod

Acoustic

Isaac Penrod is a hidden gem we found online from music forums. He started writing music in the late 90s and initially released under the band name Crimson.

Music making took the back seat while Isaac focused on raising a family, but from 2018 music has been being released again!

Never Should Have Gone is our favourite of his 2018 EP ‘The First Collection’ recorded and mastered by Ryan Brubaker of Happy Recording Studio in Avon. It’s a stripped back acoustic singer-songwriter track which takes us into an internal dialogue of Isaac figuring out that he doesn’t know what he needs, and that when he thinks he has it figured it out, he realises he has so much to learn. The chorus has a catchy hook and silky smooth high vocals.

We’d love to hear this track fleshed out with a band! Anyone fancy putting together a cover?

Listen in to more of Isaac Penrod here on Spotify, Youtube, Facebook, Instagram. And make sure not to miss him at Books & Brews in Brownsburg in Indiana on the 22nd this month!

Drown – J. Luke Cloutier

Uncategorized

J. Luke Cloutier is a new artist from Connecticut who’s making some waves in London. He’s recently recently released his debut single Drown, and we love it!

This new single delves into “the difficulty of building a relationship as a young person while also having dreams that you want to chase. It’s about understanding the difference between want and need, and knowing that the person you want now will be the person that you need someday.” Drown starts simple, folky, and acoustic but immediately gets your foot tapping. The sound quickly develops into a rich texture of synths and slide guitars making you feel immersed in a thick ocean of sound. J. Luke shows off his smooth higher register in his chorus with an effortless falsetto. The track is slick, well produced, and catchy!

We’re excited to see what new sounds are going to come out of J. Luke Cloutier! Make sure you listen to his track ‘Drown’, it can be found on Spotify, and anywhere else you can listen to music!

Transit 1 – Painted Soup

Ambient

Painted Soup was quite the discovery for us. The band is self described as “music about flowers, and sometimes those flowers are also ghosts.” Seconds into listening to their track ‘Transit 1’, we found this description couldn’t suit more.

Transit 1 is a part of an autobiographical album written by Jacob Wolos, and a part of 3 song concept. Each song is a snapshot of a different feeling within a failing relationship. Transit 1 is backed by the sound of a flowing stream, with warm finger plucked guitar echoing along with dreamy vocals all blended together into a beautiful tapestry of sound that soothes you, but leaves you with a slight sense of unease. The track is truly something beautiful.

Painted soup is a long-time collaboration between artists Jacob Wolos, and Doug Lang. Growing up in a family of therapists, Jacob explores the underlying concepts of being, the why’s of being, and why we persist through so much difficulty. His writing is self described as “…seated somewhere between a semi-cogent argument of being and fever dream.”

If you’re in New York city, make sure to see Jacob Wolos’s music used with dance company 277 dance project this summer!

To listen in, head over to Painted Soup on Spotify and Instagram and bandcamp.

Nobody Believes Me – Diabology

Thrash Metal

Diabology is a teenage thrash metal band from Los Angeles, CA. Members Jesse Bergen (guitar and vocals), Jack Kleinman (guitar), Joseph Mazisyuk (bass), and Matthew Morales (drums), met up on the rock school circuit. They were united by a love of metal and a desire to break out of the rock school mold to start working on original material. Defying the many subgenres of metal, they choose to simply call their music thrash, a tribute to the old school sounds of the late eighties, with a young and refreshing voice. They’ve recently released their debut album ‘Nobody Believes Me’ as a new years gift to their fans.

We listened to a favourite track ‘Defiling innocents’. This track pulls no punches. Starting with blistering tremolo picked riff, Diabology grabs you’re attention quickly before you’re struck by the full brunt of the band. Diabology then breaks up the rhythms and timing to give the listener respite from the relentless riffage. The track slows down midway to unleash some big drum fills and a soulful guitar solo which shows off some real talent. Defiling innocents is a brutal sludge of modern metal and the epic hooks of classic metal thrown in a blender together

If you’re in Los Angeles make sure to catch Diabology in Battle of the Bands for Wacken Open Air on February 15th at the Viper Room!
